In the midst of the pandemic, psychological wellness issues have become more prominent. Although it has become endemic, depression continues to go unrecognised. In any case, when it does, providers of medical services fight to meet demand. Two female engineers who both experienced sadness and had trouble finding treatment reasoned that the solution might be to help medical professionals recognise sadness.
A startup called Kintsugi must give innovation something to work with in this situation. Prime supporter and CEO Grace Chang viewed this as an entry problem: Both pioneers went through periods of discouragement and found it difficult to get doctors to help, which led them to think about it from their perspective as architects.
They reasoned that if it were possible to identify those who needed treatment the most, it would be simpler to achieve the goal of directing those people to the right treatment. Chang and his key supporter Rima Seiilova-Olson created an API to recognise voice-based signs of distress.
"We identified this as a fundamental problem because there are so many people trying to enter through the front door, but it is difficult to tell who is seriously discouraged and who is at this low to direct stage. Additionally, if we can share this information with those experts, we can actually have a significant impact on the specific problem "She spoke.
The majority of the time, people who are depressed will speak in a level voice, as clinicians have long observed. According to Seiilova-Olson, this is true regardless of language or culture and appears to be an inclusive human response to suffering.

Despondency was severe even before the epidemic, in fact. According to the World Health Organization, clinical depression has negative consequences on 5% of all adults. That works up to 280 million people. It shouldn't be that way; it is the primary cause of disability on the globe.
All forms of sorrow, whether mild, moderate, or severe, are curable when identified, according to the WHO. In any event, folks who are miserable repeatedly live happily and don't seek assistance for their situation. According to a 2017 paper published in the SSM Population Health Journal, 66 percent of instances of suffering in the U.S. go unreported.
This is even more tragic when you realise that, according to the WHO, 700,000 people commit suicide each year as a result of depression. Lack of trained professionals to aid in identifying it and the way clinical specialists often treat this issue only after patients report adverse effects are among the problems with getting people into therapy.
locating a source of information
Chang and Seiilova-Olson needed data before they could create a model to identify sombre vocal signals. Meeting with 200 analysts, experts, and physicians was the first stage. Through their research, they discovered that keeping a diary was a good approach for people to express their feelings.
The major item they created, which is also named Kintsugi, was a voice journaling programme ($19.99). They could then access a variety of vocal evaluations, which they utilised to create a model of what a discouraged voice sounds like.
It addressed three issues, according to Chang. First off, because the drug was not the focus of their investigation, they didn't need to worry about protecting the privacy of their individual clients. Additionally, it improved the core technology and enabled them to concentrate on developing a grading system based on the vocal example. Using design recognition finally allowed them to be linguistic sceptics; it didn't matter what people were talking about, they were still using language.
Putting the arrangement together
The designers gave this arrangement some thought when deciding how to implement it in a clinical context, and they made the decision to build an API that connects with the clinical notes section of the patient's electronic health record.
As part of the patient admission process, patients are sometimes asked to assess their own emotional well-being, although they commonly underreport their condition. The Kintsugi layout thus becomes maybe the most crucial element.

The group draws attention to the fact that the arrangement is recognised as a Clinical Decision Support tool under the 21st Century Cures Act even though it is being developed in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for what is known as De Novo endorsement. The pioneers informed me that such assistive gadgets don't need explicit FDA approval.
While Kintsugi also oversaw a clinical report and is now publishing a study in a joint research journal with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), it would have preferred not to disclose specifics prior to the official announcement.
The two founders first connected at a hackathon in 2019 and were inspired to see another woman at the event, which is typically attended mostly by males. They reaffirmed their friendship via a shared passion of programming and their contrasting outsider experiences—Chang spent his youth in Taiwan, while Seiilova-Olson spent hers in Kazakhstan.
As they got to know one another, they realised that each had struggled to receive mental health treatment when they needed it and they began looking into developing a solution for assistance. To build the product, they secured an initial $8 million seed round last year and a subsequent $20 million Series A investment earlier this year.
